Improving Food Education Through UX Research

How can we build dietary awareness among adolescents to prevent health problems?

To answer this, my team conducted UX research on cardiometabolic health issues (heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes), focusing on adolescent health and systemic barriers in the U.S. healthcare system.

Research Process

- User Research & Analysis: Interviews, surveys with nutritionists, students, and parents.

- Diary Studies: Testing and evaluating existing nutrition-based apps

- Data Synthesis: Mapped findings through Mural boards, pivot tables, and secondary research from medical studies

Conclusions

Our research revealed critical gaps in adolescent nutrition education and systemic healthcare barriers that limit access to reliable dietary guidance. Key findings include:

- Lack of Engaging Educational Tools: Existing nutrition apps fail to retain users due to overwhelming information and lack of personalization.

- Disparities in Food Access: Socioeconomic factors and school budget constraints affect the quality and availability of nutritious meals.

Need for Interactive Learning: Adolescents prefer gamified, community-driven platforms over static nutrition guidelines.

Proposed Solutions

Based on these insights, we developed design recommendations for a user-friendly digital platform that:

- Simplifies nutrition education through interactive content
- Offers personalized meal guidance tailored to diverse needs

- Incorporates engagement strategies like gamification and social features
